INCI: Allantoin
Allantoin is a naturally-occurring chemical compound found in many plants such as comfrey, horse chestnut, and bearberry. Additionally, some mammals excrete allantoin. While manufacturers can extract allantoin from plants, they prefer making it from urea and glyoxylic acid. It is compatible with most ingredients used in personal care formulations. Commonly used as a protecting agent that helps with dry skin by sealing in moisture. Allantoin can be used in products formulated for daily use, suitable for day and night products.
Raw Material Origin: Synthetic - Starting materials: glyoxylic acid and urea
Appearance: White crystalline powder
Odour: Characteristic. Odourless to almost odourless
Solubility: Slightly water soluble (to 0.5%), very slightly soluble in alcohol, insoluble in oil. Will readily disperse in an emulsion.
Melting point: 230°C
Recommended Usage: 0.2% to 2%
Formulation Tips:
- Add during the cool down phase (below 45°C). If added above 50°C in aqueous systems, recrystallisation may occur
- Can be pre-mixed into small amount of water to aid incorporation
- Thorough agitation is required to disperse properly
- End product pH: 4-6. Allantoin is not stable in alkali conditions and will hydrolyse to urea and glyoxylic acid.
