Propanediol is a natural glycol derived from corn. It has the following functions in a cosmetic formulation.
Glycols are typically used at levels between 1-10% in a formula but the propanediol has been found to be safe even when used at concentrations up to 72% (produced no irritation). As a comparrison Propylene Glycol was as irritating at 50% concentration. In addition the skin moisturising capacity of propanediol is far superior to propylene glycol which is the main reason this ingredient is prefered for those with sensitive or dry skin.
Overall Propanediol is a great addition to a sustainable cosmetic due to its functionality, life-cycle analysis (100% biobased content, readily biodegradable, better for the skin, multifunctional)
Being corn based this ingredient is also palm free.
