General Information about New Directions Herbs:

When handled correctly herbs can be an amazing addition to your skin and hair care regimen. However, care must be taken to avoid problems. In many cases dried and powdered herbs are much more potent than fresh and as such should be used with caution.  Research your herbs before use to ensure safe handling of the dried form and to ensure that its use in your desired product is recommended.  As a general rule of thumb no single herb should be used in a leave-on product at levels greater than 1% although more can be used to create tinctures or decoctions.  The exceptions to this rule are the herb cuts used for visual appeal or for exfoliation.   If you are on medication or are pregnant seek medical advice before handling the herbs.  If irritation occurs seek medical attention taking some of the herb with you to assist in diagnosis.   New Directions herbs are not designed to be ingested as they have not been stored or handled in accordance with food safety laws.   As with all natural products seasonal variations in strength, colour, size and shape are to be expected.

Usage Instructions:

These volumes are to be used as a general guide only. You  will need to carry out additional testing to find the ratio perfect for your requirements.   For use in making a herbal extract use 1 part herb to 5 parts alcohol. Cover and store in a dark, dry place for 4-5 weeks before straining then using.  Tincture:  This is like making a cup of tea,  make a tea-bag like pouch using muslin cloth or equivalent and add approx 25g of herb.  Boil  water then pour 75g  over the herb bag.  Leave to steep for 5 minutes then remove.  The water can then be used in your cosmetic products or stored (after it has been preserved) to use at a later date.  If the extract fails to reach the intensity in colour or odour that you expected increase the dose to 50g in 50g water.   A decoction can be made by boiling up a herb bag of 25-50% herb in 75-50% water on the stove for approx 20 minutes.  A poultice can be made by selecting your herbs and blending them with either bath salts, sugars or clays before wrapping into a muslin cloth.  The resulting poultice can then be heated in a steamer and used during massage. The contents can also be added to a herbal bath if desired.

Best avoided in large doses by:
