500 g Caprylhydroxamic Acid

Product number: RM500CAPRHYDXMCACID

Product Description

Ingredients: Caprylhydroxamic Acid.

Caprylhydroxamic Acid is a naturally occuring organic acid but in this case it is synthetic making this a nature-identical rather than natural material. As a very weak acid, this ingredient stays in its active state up to pH 8 making it a more versatile option than many acid-derived mild preservative agents.

Caprylhydroxamic Acid has good preservative efficacy on yest and mold as well as some chelating power, especially against iron- a common source of food for microbes.  It is often used in combination with bacteria-specific preservatives to form broad-spectrum blends.  This is suitable for use in natural and regular cosmetic formulations.

Caprylhydroxamic Acid has been found effective against p Acnes making it a suitable active in products formulated for problem skin.

Recommendations for usage: 0.1-1%

pH activity range: 4-8

Heat Stability:  Not bad, avoid over-heating or holding at 80C plus for a long time but can tolerate up to 6 hours at 60C and 2 hours at 90C.

Solubility: Sits at the interface between oil and water so miscible rather than fully soluble in water-only formulations. Best added with a glycol or alcohol co-solubiliser if wanting to add it to a water serum or spritzer.

Compatibility: Broad compatibility but ingredients containing high levels of metal ions may cause a colour shift towards an orange tone. This is due to the complexes formed between the acid and iron. For this reason it is best not added to clay-based formulations.

Aroma:  Characteristic and light. Non-offensive, chemical odour.

Applications: Use in creams, lotions, serums, treatment products and hair care.

Note:   The only way to be sure that your preservative system is working in your product is to carry out micro testing.  While we are happy to pass on information and make theoretical recommendations of how to get the best out of our ingredients we can make no guarantees without this testing.  There are two levels of test that a microbiological lab will do - one is a micro count which gives you a 'moment in time' look at the cleanliness of your formula and may also characterise the microbes present.  The second is a Preservative Efficacy Test or PET. This is highly recommended as it tests how your product performs over time when it is challenged by microbes.   You are legally required to market and sell products that are safe and microbial stability is an important part of that.
