Workshop Overview

Styling Edition!

Calling all hair product brand owners, product developers and hair fashion enthusiasts!

This one day course offers you the opportunity to explore and apply the science and beauty behind urban haircare. The formulations we develop pay homage to the iconic and timeless Sydney side aesthetic that combines edgy high-fashion with a laid-back beachside chic. The results? Nutritive, easy-to-wear products that deliver photo-shoot ready hair with minimal fuss.

The six formulations we create together balance the science of runway ready styling with the wisdom of scalp health and vitality ensuring comfort, wearability and a level of performance that instils confidence.

Key topics covered in this course include:

  • Hair chemistry and scalp health basics from a styling perspective.
  • The science of shine - vegetable oils vs silicone chemistry.
  • Formulating for substantivity and results - How to get the best performance out of your product.
  • Building strength and vitality - A look at proteins and the chemistry of conditioning.
  • Pollution control and hair resilience - maintaining hair strength in the urban environment.

This workshop is offered as a live and interactive study-at-home workshop that runs from 10:00am-4:00pm on Saturdays. Participants will have an ingredients kit and recipe booklet delivered to their location and will use this during class to create a range of beautiful skincare.

Instructor Profile

To ensure your learning experience can be applied and customised to suit your aspirations the course is taught from both a chemistry and an application perspective:

Amanda Foxon-Hill is our in-house cosmetic chemist teaching expert. She has over twenty years experience in guiding students and brand owners through new product development and onto launch, trouble-shooting and customisation. Amanda's approach is to meet students where they are at which often starts with identifying and investigating the myths and misconceptions around the topic before focusing on building a solid foundation of scientific literacy. This approach is designed to teach you how, rather than what to think.

Amanda also consults to the cosmetics industry on all aspects of green chemistry and product development and advocates the promotion of sensible science to consumer groups via her blog www.realizebeauty.com.

Amanda has a degree in Chemistry and a Diploma in Cosmetic Science and Formulating.

Sam Overton is our Industry Insider expert, again with over twenty years hands-on experience spanning hairstyling, brand ownership and development, hair education and fashion shoot planning. Sam teaches from a hands-on product application perspective, explaining how to get the right dose for the hair, how selecting the right order of application, the best tools for the job at hand and how to create and achieve the look you are going for.
