Did you know? The avocado tree, Persea gratissima, has a unique reproductive strategy in its flowers called "protogynous dichogamy". This means that the flowers have both male and female reproductive organs, but they become active at different times to avoid self-pollination. In the morning, the flowers function as females, allowing them to receive pollen from other trees via bees or other pollinators. By the afternoon of the same day, these flowers close, preventing further pollination. The next day, the flowers reopen as males, releasing their pollen to be spread by pollinators. This precise timing promotes genetic diversity among avocado populations and adds an interesting aspect to the reproductive biology of the avocado tree.
