Did you know? An unusual feature of the Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) plant is its role in the survival of a unique bird species, the New Zealand bellbird (Anthornis melanura), also known as Korimako or Makomako in Māori. The Manuka plant has a mutualistic relationship with this bird, wherein the bellbird plays a crucial role in pollinating the flowers of the Manuka. During the flowering season, the bellbird is attracted to the Manuka's flowers for their nectar. As the bellbird feeds, its head encounters the flower's stamens and pistils, thereby picking up and transferring pollen from one flower to another. This process of pollination is essential for the reproduction of the Manuka plant.

What makes this relationship unusual is not just the mutual benefit but also the specificity and the evolved adaptations of both the Manuka flower and the bellbird that facilitate this interaction. The Manuka flowers are adapted to provide an accessible and abundant source of nectar to the bellbird, while the bellbird's feeding behavior and morphology are well-suited to Manuka's flower structure, ensuring efficient pollen transfer.

Supplier information: Our supplier has been implementing a series of regenerative practices designed to restore the health and vitality of the plantations, which have not been maintained for up to 15 years. These include selective harvesting to ensure that younger, healthier trees have the space and sunlight needed to thrive. In addition, there is a significant investment in undergrowth management to control weeds and prevent them from outcompeting native plants, thus preserving the biodiversity that is essential for a healthy ecosystem. By adopting these regenerative practices, the supplier aims not only to improve the yield and quality of the harvest but also to contribute to the broader ecological restoration of the area. This holistic approach guarantees the sustainability of the plantations for future generations, aligning with global efforts towards environmental conservation and responsible land management.
