The Sandalwood tree has long been prized for its aromatic wood but in more recent years the oil that can be extracted from its fruit (drupe) has gained in popularity and appeal.
The carrier oil from the Sandalwood tree can be harvested annually without damaging the crop making this a sustainable, natural source of oil for the cosmetic and other industries. At a yield of around 50% the fruits are highly productive and give an interesting and useful oil.
Typical fatty acid profile:
Palmitic Acid 4%
Stearic 1.8%
Oleic 52%
Linoleic 1.75%
Linolenic 1.39%
Stearolic Acid C18:1 3.38%
Ximenynic Acid 34%
Of these components it is the Ximenynic acid that is most remarkable as it is this that has been found to be anti-inflammatory. In the vegetable oil the ximenynic acid is part of a triglyceride and so is not all available to act in this way but small fragments of this acid do float freely within the oil and with only 0.004% of free Ximenynic Acid required for a positive effect it is thought that using this oil at around 7-10% in a product will give the skin access to enough Ximenynic acid for a benefit.
The oil has a rich yet fast-absorbing texture with a low sheen making it suitable for anti-ageing and soothing skin care formulating as well as for scalp and foot treatments.
