Description: A naturally occurring mineral (Smectite) clay that is commonly used to emulsify, thicken, and colour cosmetics. Because of its large molecular size, it is not absorbed through the skin. In water the clay swells to form a thickened liquid that can be used to suspend, stabilise and bring body to your formulation. Products thickened with Magnesium Aluminium Silicate clays are soft and silky on the skin and have a smooth, luxurious flow.
Manufacturing Tips: Make sure that the clay is added to water only as other ingredients may affect the clays ability to form platelets. Use water that is 70C or hotter and start to mix it so that you get a vortex appear, slowly introduce the clay while mixing and keep mixing until a smooth thickened liquid is formed.
Dose: Effective from 0.25-2.5% depending on what other ingredients you have in your product.
This won't form clear products but it is suitable to use with some surfactants and with a wide range of actives. The clay won't set on your skin like a face mask as this is a different type of clay.
