Palm and Other Feed Stock. Can We Ever Farm Responsibly?

This discussion pretty much got started on the back of a Palm Oil story but then, somewhere around the beginning of 2014 I stopped writing so much about it. I felt that I'd shared all I knew, that there was both a system and support for this better way of doing things that would ultimately solve the problems and elevate the palm crop to the lofty status of 'super veg' that I thought it deserved. But that was back then. Much has changed in the past two years and I don't feel it is all for the better. People can be such a disappointment.

Trees play an important role in managing air quality, play host to thousands upon thousands of species of flora and fauna, give us shelter, building materials, medicine and even spirituality - things we all know but that are somewhat forgotten in the endless pursuit of more.

Palm Oil Position Statement

It seems perfectly reasonable to want to boycott palm oil and its derivatives as it is palm plantations that are eating into what is left of Indonesia's rain forests and devastating Orang-Utan populations. The picture is grim and the thought of being a part of all that in the name of vanity feels downright wrong. We need to act, but is boycotting palm at a consumer level or banning it from our formulations at a manufacturing level going to solve this environmental crisis?
