Did You Know? An unusual aspect of the Geranium Bourbon plant growing in Madagascar is its ability to adapt to the island's unique microclimates and diverse soil types, resulting in variations in the essential oil's chemical profile. Madagascar's distinct environmental conditions, such as its volcanic soil and fluctuating rainfall patterns, influence the concentration of key compounds like Citronellol and Geraniol in the oil. This adaptability not only contributes to the rich and complex aroma of the essential oil but also makes Geranium Bourbon from Madagascar uniquely different from those grown in other regions, providing a signature scent and profile that is highly valued in the aromatherapy and cosmetics industries.

Supplier Information: Our Geranium Bourbon essential oil is sourced through a committed partnership with a supplier who specialises exclusively in high-quality organic products. The Geranium Bourbon plant, a perennial that thrives year-round under temperate climates with adequate rainfall, requires well-drained soils to flourish. However, this plant is sensitive to weather conditions, as it cannot tolerate excess water, drought, or frost. These factors can lead to variations in both the availability and quality of the essential oil produced.

The plants are typically cultivated from cuttings, which are planted at the start of the rainy season to ensure successful growth. After planting, it takes approximately five to six months before the leaves and buds are ready for harvesting and distillation. The harvesting season for Geranium Bourbon spans about six months, from October to April. Although the plant may bloom during this period, the essential oil is primarily found in the leaves rather than the flowers.

It takes around 600 to 800 kilograms of leaves to produce just one kilogram of essential oil, highlighting the labour-intensive process behind this precious product. Our supplier practises intercropping by planting lemongrass alongside Geranium Bourbon. While this combination doesn’t offer specific agricultural benefits, it demonstrates a commitment to avoiding monocultures and optimising the use of available land.

After a few years, the Geranium Bourbon plants become exhausted and must be replaced, ensuring the sustainability and ongoing production of this valuable essential oil. Our partnership with this supplier reflects our shared dedication to quality, sustainability, and the production of certified organic essential oils.
