INCI: Glyceryl Caprylate, Glyceryl Undecylenate
Use Levels: 0.9-1.1%
Origin: Natural: Mixed vegetable oils.
Heat Tolerance: Good up to 90C so can be added into the water phase of an emulsion before mixing or added at the end of manufacture.
Microbes Targeted: Broad-Spectrum (Bacteria, Yeast and Mould). Like many natural preservatives, this is slower to act than some of our synthetic options and as such could become overwhelmed in more challenging environments when used as the stand-alone preservative. Some examples of high risk formulations include those containing pigments (Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, mica, clays etc), those containing herbs or proteins.
We recommend an evidence-based approach to optimising your product's preservation strategy and as such advise undertaking stability and micro testing to inform your formulating decisions in this area.
Best Suited To: Can be used in all formulations but best in O/W or W/O emulsions. This preservative also has a slight emollient action thus improving the feel of your product.
Added Benefits: This is an allowable input into an organic formulation. It is a versatile preservative that has a very mild odour and no colour. This product is also great for products for problem skin as the glyceryl caprylate has some anti-bacterial properties.
Ingredient Form: This ingredient can be supplied as a liquid or a solid depending on the outside temperature - it has a melting point of around 30C. It is best to heat it to 80C to get it to mix into water or use a co-solubiliser to help it mix in.
Avoid These Conditions: Avoid pH over 7 to prevent the glyceryl caprylate from hydrolysing. This preservative can have an impact on viscosity meaning that your cream may get slightly to significantly thinner when this preservative is added. This may not happen but we advise running a small batch test the first time you use a new preservative.
Using in a spritz spray: If you are wishing to use this preservative in a spritzer we recommend pre-mixing this preservative into alcohol to get better solubility and performance in your product. The amount of alcohol required may vary from 1-10% of the formula depending on how much preservative you are adding and how well your essential oils are solubilised. We generally don't opt for this preservative as the first choice because of the limited water solubility of this ingredient but if for whatever reason you do want to use it you can usually find a way to make it work.
Please note: This product may come with less than a 9 month shelf life. If used within the specified shelf life, it will not affect the preservative efficacy in a product.
ALSO NOTE THAT THE FORM OF THIS PRODUCT VARIES BASED ON AMBIENT TEMPERATURE. IN COLD WEATHER THIS WILL APPEAR AS A SOFT, CRYSTALINE SOLID. IN WARM WEATHER IT APPEARS AS A LIQUID. IN EITHER STATE THE CHEMISTRY AND CONCENTRATION IS THE SAME.
