Current research suggests that the exact type or origin of the ceramide (natural, nature-identical or synthetic) is not influencing efficacy (its ability to deliver a benefit) and that all Ceramides improve skin condition. See our Ceramide article for references and more information.
Function: Deep hydration, barrier restoration, moisturisation, skin comfort, anti-ageing.
Details: Ceramides are waxy lipids found in cell membranes. They play an important role in skin protection, assisting in barrier functionality and moisturisation have been extracted from plant material to make this blend. The level of ceramide in our skin decreases with age and also decrease as a consequence of stress (pimples, irritation etc) This loss of Ceramides weakens skin barrier functioning. Topical application of ceramide-rich skincare can help rectify that and restore the skins vitality.
Use Details: Ceramide Complex is supplied as a fluid, milky emulsion that is dispersible in water. This active can be used to boost the moisturisation of your water-only products without having to incorporate an oil phase into the formulation but doing this will result in a slightly cloudy to milky product (depending on how much you add). For creams Ceramide Complex is usually added once the emulsion is formed but before the homogenisation phase.
Use Rate: 1-5% as supplied for daily use. Can be used at up to 15% for intensive treatments. For normal skin or for maintaining barrier strength 1-1.5% is appropriate, for Dry or ageing skin we recommend 3% and for skin repair/ protection 5% is best.
Product Ideas: Moisturising creams and lotions, surfactant products (for moisturising claims), shaving, serums, sleep masks, gel or cream masks. Also useful in intensive hair care products focusing on scalp care such as conditioning masks, scalp hydrating and balancing shampoos and leave-on oils.
