Chemistry: Chemically Pearl is Calcium Carbonate which is an alkali salt that will react with any acids in your formula to release carbon dioxide. For this reason we do not recommend using pearl in products that contain AHA's or are formulated at an acidic pH. The optimal pH for products containing pearl is between 6-8 although pH 5.5 products are possible. Take care when using this with preservatives that work by acidifying their environment (AMTCide, Leucidal etc) as these might change the pH of the product and result in degradation of the pearl.
Use levels: 1-5% is typical although there is no limit to how much of this you can use. The ingredient is safe to apply directly to the skin if desired.
Function: Pearl powder is a physical exfoliant that works by sloughing off dead skin cells.
