COSMOS is a not-for profit organisation formed out of a collaboration between five major European organic and natural certification bodies BDIH - Germany, COSMEBIO - France, Ecocert Greenlife - France, ICEA - Italy, Soil Association - UK. By working together, these five independent certification bodies have created a recognisable and robust cosmetic-product focused certification that both understands and addresses the needs of the market. While the COSMOS brand was developed in Europe it has a global reach and is fast becoming one of the most recognised certification systems in the cosmetic world.
Being cosmetic product focused the COSMOS certification makes it possible to create high quality, progressive formulations based on the principals of green chemistry which include sustainability, functionality, safety and environmental impact. Like other organic certifiers COSMOS requires that the product contain a minimum of 70% Organic input for their minimum certification and 95% or above to qualify for 'Certified Organic' status. COSMOS also require the manufacturer to use organic materials wherever available as a minimum standard across all their certifications, even if the finished product is not going to reach organic status.
