INCI: Caprylhydroxamic Acid
Caprylhydroxamic Acid has good efficacy on yeast and moulds as well as some chelating power, especially against iron- a common source of food for microbes. It is often used in combination with bacteria-specific preservatives to form broad-spectrum blends.
As a very weak acid, this ingredient stays in its active state up to pH 8 making it a more versatile option than many acid-derived mild active agents.
Raw Material Origin: Synthetic
Appearance: White crystalline powder
Odour: Characteristic and light. Non-offensive, chemical odour
Suitable For: Creams, lotions, serums, treatment products and hair care.
Recommended Usage: 0.1-0.25%
Formulation Tips:
Solubility: Miscible in water - Pentylene Glycol (Hydrolite 5) was found to be a good solubiliser at ratio 1 part Caprylhydroxamic Acid to 25 parts Pentylene Glycol. Non-ionic solubilisers such as Polysorbate 20, Decyl Glucoside or our Surfactant SLH solubilised the acid at a ratio starting from 3 parts solubiliser to 1 part acid. Can be used in high strength alcohol (70% solution) but may fall out of solution if the alcohol is diluted.
Compatibility: Broad compatibility but ingredients containing high levels of metal ions may cause a colour shift towards an orange tone. This is due to the complexes formed between the acid and iron. For this reason, it is best not added to clay-based formulations.
